About Franco Baresi

Franco Baresi made his debut for AC Milan in 1977 and grew into one of the greatest defenders and captains in the club's history. The Italian central defender spent his entire professional club career at AC Milan and became the face of one of the most successful periods in the history of the Rossoneri.

Baresi played no fewer than 719 official matches for AC Milan and wore the captain's armband for many years. With the club, he won, among other things, six Serie A titles, four Italian Supercups, and three European Cups I/Champions Leagues.

One of the absolute highlights came in the late 80s and early 90s, when Baresi was part of a legendary defense with, among others, Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta, and Mauro Tassotti. Under the leadership of coach Arrigo Sacchi, AC Milan grew into a dominant European top club.

With the Italian national team, Baresi became a world champion in 1982. At the 1994 World Cup, he again reached the final and, despite a knee injury, played an impressive match. Italy ultimately lost the final to Brazil after a penalty shootout.

Baresi was known for his excellent positioning, leadership, insight, and technical qualities. Despite his relatively small stature for a central defender, he was exceptionally strong at reading the game and intercepting attacks.

His exceptional loyalty to AC Milan, impressive trophy cabinet, and leadership made Franco Baresi an absolute club legend. The number 6 shirt was retired by AC Milan out of respect for his achievements after his departure.
